Japan deputy PM apologizes for Nazi remarks

Japan's Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso has now retracted comments he made earlier this week, saying that Japan could "learn" from pre-war Nazi Germany.

On Monday, Aso said in a lecture that Japan should study how the Nazi had transformed Germany’s constitution in the 1930s, without raising international alarm.

On Thursday, Aso withdrew his comments, saying he’d been misunderstood both inside and outside Japan.

In his speech on Monday, Aso also condoned visits to Japan’s Yasukuni shrine, saying it was natural to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country.

China’s Foreign Ministry says Aso’s Nazi remarks have caused alarm among Japan’s neighbors and the international community, and concern over the country’s political direction.
